The main products of the company, which specializes in healthy and health-promoting plant-based foods, are the Yosa oat snacks eaten with a spoon, Yosa Smoothies, which are drunk, and Yosa Food&Dip, a healthy alternative for cooking and dipping.
The preparation of the oat products is based on fermentation. The aim is to retain the natural properties of the raw materials, minimal processing and traceability of the entire quality chain from the field to the table.
“Yosa contains abundant amounts of living lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria, which bring balance to the functioning of the stomach and improve the system’s resistance. Oat fibres also reduce blood cholesterol,” says CEO Merja Scharlin.
Bioferme endeavours to do as little damage as possible to the natural surroundings in all its operations. It uses primarily high-grade Finnish raw materials produced nearby and packs its products in recyclable eco-packaging.
Bioferme, which was established in 1977, is gradually aiming for international markets with its functional products. Yosa products have been exported to neighbouring Sweden since 2000, but now efforts are being increased.
Going further afield than the Scandinavian countries will mean new markets for the company where oats are not so well known as a raw material nor used as much as in Scandinavia. As, however, the popularity of functional products is growing all the time, the scope is great.
“We are active on the German market, but conquering Europe will require time, resources and partners. We’ll proceed one bite at a time,” Scharlin says.
